My teaching philosophy, in brief, is: Martin Luther King, Jr. said it best, “Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” If my students leave my classroom with increased intelligence and character along with a greater understanding of political science than and only then will I have accomplished my true goal as an educator. Whether I am teaching in a traditional classroom or online my teaching philosophy has three core parts: (1) mutual respect where not only do I share my expectation for my students but where they can share their expectations for me as their instructor; (2) practical politics where I share with my students that political institutions and the actors that surround those intuitions are more than history but that politics lives and they can become involved as much or as little as they desire; and (3) sharing the contributions of historically marginalized groups, like African Americans and women, to politics.
